今回取り上げる表現は、“the tip of the iceberg”です。まず、“iceberg”という表現を『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)で引いたところ、「氷山」という意味がありました。“ice”が「氷」という意味なのはよく知られています。その後ろについている“berg”を『ウィズダム英和辞典』で引いたところ、“berg”は“iceberg”と同義としか出ていませんでした。インターネットで検索してみたところ、ドイツ語で“berg”は「山」を意味すると出てきました(「Bing翻訳」)。
今回の記事に出てきた“the tip of the iceberg”は、「氷山の一角」という意味です。LDOCEでは、“a small sign of a problem that is much larger”と定義されていました。LDOCEの定義ではネガティブなニュアンスが含まれていますが、今回の記事においてはポジティブな文脈で用いられているので、どちらのニュアンスでも用いることができそうです。
