今回取り上げる表現は、“blue-collar”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「肉体労働(者)の、ブルーカラーの」とありました。

LDOCEには、“blue-collar workers do physical work, rather than working in offices”と定義されています。

今回取り上げた表現の由来は、労働者の作業服の色が青いことにあるそうです(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。ちなみに、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には似た表現として“white-collar”「事務職の」と“pink-collar”「ピンクカラーの(伝統的な女性の職についていう)」があげられていました。この二つの由来も興味深いので、ぜひ辞書を引いてみてください。(Blue Sky)
