Mobile compact suitcases: Efficient, smart support for work, business trips

For business people, compact bags with wheels are smart and efficient as they can carry laptops, piles of paper, folders and other relatively heavy items. Such bags are particularly suitable for short business trips as they are smaller than regular-size suitcases.

Called “carry bag” in Japan, compact suitcases generally have four wheels on the corners of a rectangular base, although some types have only two wheels at the front corners and must be tilted when pulled. The handles are telescoping so they can be adjusted for convenience and to avoid bothering people on public transport.

『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べたところ, この表現は直接記載がありませんでした。そこで, “neutral” について, いま一度確認すると, 「中立の」のほか, 「際立った特徴のない」, また「はっきりしない」とありました。

Merriam-Webster.com に “gender-neutral” は “not referring to either sex but only to people in general” と定義されています。

つまり今回は, ブルーやピンクといった性別をイメージさせる色ではなく, グレーやブラウンのような, 誰でも抵抗なく使用できるスーツケースのカラーを “gender-neutral colors” と表現しているのではないかと思いました。(Cayu)
