apply 復習

月曜日の通訳入門の授業で「化粧水をつける」や「クリームを塗る」などにはapplyを用いるということをUG先生に教えていただきました。今回はその意味でのapplyが用いられている記事を見つけました。

Start early in fight against dry winter skin

It’s been getting colder day by day. This is the time of year when women are increasingly concerned about dry, itchy skin due to chilly winds outdoors and excessive heating indoors. Healthy skin can be maintained by taking early measures.

Since about October, a 35-year-old female company worker from Tokyo began to feel dryness in the skin on her hands and legs as well as occasional itchiness. “When my hands feel rough, I do things like apply hand cream, but it concerns me that I don’t know what’s causing it,” she says worriedly.

今回取り上げるのはapplyです。applyは「申し込む」や「適用する」などの意味がパッと浮かびますが、今回はそれらとは異なる意味で用いられています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、2つ目の意味に「（…）を（…に）当てる（put）、（熱など）を加える、作動させる、（薬など）をつける」とありました。LDOCEには “to put or spread something such as paint, liquid, or medicine onto a surface” と定義されております。例として “Apply the cream evenly over the skin.” や “apply make-up/lipstick etc” が取り上げられており、「化粧をする」や「口紅を塗る」というときなどにもapplyを用いるということがわかりました。（aqua）
