cathode

昨日扱ったゼミでのプリントでcathodeという単語に出会いました。ざっくりと調べたところ、対極の意味を兼ねている単語であることが分かりました。一体どのように使い分ければいいのか気になったので調べてみました。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “the negatively charged electrode by which electrons enter an electrical device. The opposite of anode”と定義されていました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「（電池の）正極，（電子管・電解槽などの）陰極」と載っておりました。
ちなみに反対語のanodeは「（電池の）負極，（電子管・電解槽などの）陽極」とのことです。

さらに詳しくBritannica Concise Encyclopediaで調べたところ、 “Terminal or electrode at which electrons enter a system, such as an electrolytic cell or an electron tube. In a battery or other source of direct current, the cathode is the positive terminal. In a passive load it is the negative terminal. In an electron tube, such as a cathode-ray tube, electrons steam off the cathode and travel through the tube toward the anode”と書かれておりました。

あまり科学系は得意でないのですが、かなり細かく規定されていることが分かりました。（Gomez）
