今回取り上げるのは、“off the beaten track”という表現です。この表現をMerriam-Websterで調べてみると、“in or to a place that is not close to the places where people usually go”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「人里離れた、人気のない、道も通じていない」などと記載されていました。
“beaten”には「踏み固められた」を意味し、そこに“off”が加わったことで上記の意味になると考えられます。(ninetails)
