Students left light on before fire killed boy at Tokyo art event

University students who exhibited a wooden jungle gym that caught fire at an art event in Tokyo, killing a 5-year-old boy, had left an incandescent light on inside the structure, police have quoted one of the students as saying.
"We had turned on an incandescent bulb inside the exhibit," a male student at Nippon Institute of Technology who was involved in the production of the display was quoted as telling Yotsuya Police Station of the Metropolitan Police Department. A burnt incandescent bulb was found at the scene of the fire.

今回取り上げるのは、今問題となっている「白熱灯」を表す“incandescent light”です。

LDOCEでは“producing a bright light when heated ”と定義されているように、“incandescent”は「白熱光を発する」という形容詞で、名詞は“incandescence”となります。

語源はラテン語で“in”と「白くなる」の“candescere”が組み合わさった“incandescere”だそうです。

ニュース番組では白熱灯とLEDライトの比較実験がたびたび行われていますが、白熱灯はエネルギーのほとんどを熱として放出する一方、LEDライトは熱を逃す工夫がされているそうです。(flyingbird)
