Peek inside Kumamoto Castle shows massive damage

In a glimpse of the difficult reconstruction ahead, video images of the interior of the main keep of Kumamoto Castle, released for the first time since powerful earthquakes in April, showed damage "worse than expected.”

The footage, released recently by the Kumamoto city government, showed that the inside of stone walls beneath the Kumamoto Castle tower had collapsed at many sites.

Toshihiko Tsurushima, 61, who shot the 15-minute video in September, said he could hardly make his way through the debris.

Tsurushima, who is in charge of protecting cultural properties at the Kumamoto Castle Research Center, added that the inside of stone walls that is not visible from outside of the building was “almost completely destroyed.”

“The situation was worse than expected,” he said. “Work to restore the structure might prove harder than estimated.”

今回取り上げるのはkeepです。keepの名詞での意味を考えると、生活費や生活必需品という意味が思い浮かびますが、今回はその意味では文脈に合いません。ではどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で名詞の項目を調べると、2つ目に「天守閣」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEでは “a large strong tower, usually in the centre of a castle” と定義されております。
その他の意味もあるのではないかと思い、電子辞書に内蔵されている『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）で調べてみますと、「本丸、要塞」という意味もあることがわかりました。動詞では普段からよく用いますが、名詞の意味も覚えておきたいです。
