Park scandal could affect ties with Japan
A political vacuum triggered by confusion from allegations that South Korean President Park Geun-hye allowed a friend to peddle influence over state affairs could, if prolonged, affect the country’s diplomatic and security policies, such as those in response to North Korea’s provocative moves.
During a ministers’ informal conference on Saturday, South Korean Prime Minister Hwang Kyo Ahn confirmed a policy of strengthening cooperation within the government over such sensitive political issues as the U.S. miltary’s deployment of a cutting-edge antimissile system, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, in South Korea.
Park has steered policy to enhance cooperation among Japan, the United States and South Korea in order to deal with North Korea’s provocative moves such as a series of nuclear tests and missile launches this year. In July, the South Korean government officially decided on the THAAD deployment and also announced on Oct. 27 a policy to aim for an early conclusion of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) with Japan.
South Korean opposition parties strongly oppose the THAAD deployment and the conclusion of the GSOMIA. They are also negative about the implementation of a deal in December last year between Japan and South Korea to resolve the issue of former comfort women.
In response to the recent political scandal, the possibility cannot be excluded that Park’s administration could accept opposition party objections and be forced to change its policies to avoid a stalemate in national politics, observers said.
