People who miss Hanako, the popular elephant who died in May at a Tokyo zoo, can chip in via the internet to help build a statue in her memory. Hanako reached the age of 69 and was the nation’s oldest elephant.

About \2 million had been donated to the city government and others as of Oct. 19, but the committee has started accepting online donations in order to reach its goal of \10 million.
Donors can give any amount from \100 by inputting their credit card information on the committee’s website, according to the city government’s life and economy section, which serves as the committee’s liaison office.

今回取り上げるのは、“chip in”という表現です。この表現を聞くと、ゴルフの用語である「チップイン」を思い浮かべますが、ここではどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。
“chip in”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“if each person in a group chips in, they each give a small amount of money so that they can buy something together”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「〔金・労力などを〕(〜のために)出し合う、寄付する」と記載されていました。今回の募金活動では、1000万円を目標額として、100円から寄付金を募っています。(ninetails)
