HIROSHIMA--The Nippon Ham Fighters defeated the Hiroshima Carp 10-4 on Oct. 29 to win the Japan Series and claim Japan’s professional baseball title for the first time in 10 years.
The Sapporo-based Fighters exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth inning, including a grand slam off the bat of third baseman Brandon Laird, to break a 4-4 tie in Game 6 at Mazda Stadium in Hiroshima.
The Carp had no answer for the rally, and the Pacific League champs took the best-of-seven series.
