Solar-cell chair charges phones during coffee breaks
Some deck chairs are more special than others.
Some, for example, charge your smartphone while you are charged for a coffee.
A new unassuming chair equipped with a solar-cell panel and battery will be installed at certain cafes in Tokyo at outdoor tables to do just that.
The eco-friendly battery chair was developed by electronics giant Sharp Corp. for a project run by Tokyo Environmental Public Service Corp.
The project aims to set up sustainable public phone charging stands around the city.
The solar cell panel is mounted on the rear of the chair’s backrest, and it swivels to catch sunlight.
The USB port is also on the back of the chair while a storage battery pack is mounted beneath the seat, ensuring electricity is provided even on cloudy days.
The chairs will be introduced at three Starbucks branches in Tokyo from the end of October. If Sharp deems them a success, the firm will consider selling them on the open market.

今回取り上げるのはswivelです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べますと、他動詞で「（…を）回転させる（around ,round）」、自動詞で「回転する、くるりと向きを変える（around, round）」とありました。LDOCEでは “to turn around quickly and face a different direction, or to make something do this” と定義されており、パッと素早く向きを変えるイメージであることがわかります。
今回は背もたれの部分に取り付けられている太陽電池が日光を集めるためにくるっと向きを変える様子をswivelで表現しています。
