‘Sense of smell’ vital to business success

A mantis took up residence in a potted yuzu citrus fruit tree on a veranda this summer. After it caught a stink bug, a swarm of small flies suddenly appeared and clung to the dying bug. They were like hyenas and vultures snatching away a lion’s prey.

Where did the flies come from?

When I asked Ryohei Kanzaki, a professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, he said they were attracted by the odor.

今回取り上げる表現は “olfactory” です。

『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 「嗅覚器の」とありました。名詞は解剖学の用語で「[pl]嗅神経」, また「[pl]嗅覚器」を指すそうです。

Merriam-Webster.comには “of, relating to, or connected with the sense of smell” と定義されています。

さらに, 上記の英英辞典で語源を確認すると, ラテン語の “olfactorius” と記されていました。この “olfactorius” は, “to smell” を示す “olēre” と “to do” を指す “facere ” で成り立っていることがわかりました。そういえば、コミュニケーション学のNVCで学んだ臭学のことをOlfacticsと呼ぶことを今、思い出しました。(Cayu)
