Fireworks bring festive fun to earthquake-hit Kumamoto

Some 14,000 fireworks brilliantly illuminated the night sky in an annual competition here, lifting the spirits of victims struggling to rebuild their communities six months after the devastating Kumamoto earthquakes.

Among the crowd at the Yatsushiro Fireworks Festival on Oct. 15 were about 200 residents of the village of Nishihara and the town of Mifune, localities hit hard by the series of quakes in April. They were invited to enjoy the show.

“This is the first time I've seen fireworks this year,” said a 57-year-old care provider from Nishihara, who had to stay overnight in her car after her home was damaged by a temblor. “It was refreshing physically and mentally.”

Leading fireworks manufacturers from across the country competed in showcasing pyrotechnics of all sizes, colors and shapes in the festival.

今回取り上げるのはpyrotechnicsです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「1（格式）花火製造術　2（複数扱い）（格式）花火の打ち上げ、（弁舌、演奏などの）華々しさ」とありました。LDOCEには1つ目に “[plural] formal or technical a public show of fireworks” 2つ目に “[uncountable] technical the skill or business of making fireworks”　3つ目に“[plural] an impressive show of someone’s skill as a public performer, musician etc” と説明されております。
pyroとtechnicsに分けて考えると、pyroは火、熱、高温を表す連結要素で、それのtechnic（技術）となり上記のような意味になると考えられます。
