Tokyo man, 77, impaled, killed by falling metal pipe in Ropponggi

An elderly man walking with his wife was killed when he was impaled by a steel pipe that fell from scaffolding in Tokyo on the morning of Oct. 14.
Kazuhiko Iimura, 77, and his wife were walking on the sidewalk below an apartment building at 9:55 a.m. when the 1.5-meter-long pipe slammed into the pensioner's head.
The metal rod had fallen from a height of 10 floors from scaffolding that stretched from the first to the 10th floor. The scaffolding was being disassembled that morning, but the pipe eluded metal boards that were in place to prevent parts and equipment from falling to the ground.
The man, who lived in Shinjuku Ward, was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His wife, also in her 70s, was taken to the hospital as she was struck on the hip by a steel pipe. Her injuries are not serious.
The apartment building is located 300 meters east of Roppongi Station, according to the Azabu Police Station.

LDOCEでは、"a set of poles and boards that are built into a structure for workers to stand on when they are wo"と定義されていました。

(Blue Sky)
