hit the nail on the head

本日のオーラルコミュニケーションの授業内で、Ｊ先生から英語表現をいくつか習いました。その中のうちの一つ、 “hit the nail on the head”をご紹介いたします。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「正確に要点をつく，図星を指す」と載っておりました。 “hit the right nail on the head”とも使うようです。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “find exactly the right answer”とのことでした。

一体どういう語源があるのか気になったためインターネットで検索したところ、正確な起源が分かっていないとのことでした。しかし1438年には、現代と同じような言い回しで使用されていたことが確認されているようです。

どのように使用されているのか気になったので、ニュース記事などを探していたところ以下の見出しを見つけました。

Why is the U.S. demanding Russia and the Syrian government stop bombing Aleppo, but there has been almost no mention of the indiscriminate bombing of civilians and the killing of children by Saudi Arabia in Yemen? In Yemen, the U.S. is supporting and arming the Saudis despite knowing the Saudis are likely committing war crimes.

Likewise, why was there no concern for the wanton destruction by the Ukrainian government of hospitals, schools, and infrastructure in eastern Ukraine killing thousands of their own people and causing more than a million to flee?

Seems the answer must be what President Lyndon Johnson once said, “They may be bastards, but they’re our bastards.”

記事の内容から、Lyndon氏の過去の発言が図星であったという風に解釈できるかと思います。
