Goeido threw caution to the wind and, by throwing down yokozuna Harumafuji in spectacular fashion, moved to the verge of his first career title.

Not bad for a wrestler whose main concern starting the tournament was to secure the majority of wins he needed to keep his rank.

Goeido made it 13 wins in 13 days at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Koku-gikan, putting him into position to clinch the championship with one day to spare today.

Goeido will be assured of taking home the Emperor’s Cup with either a victory over No. 6 maegashira Tamawashi, or a loss by No. 14 maegashira Endo in his match against sekiwake Takayasu. With an 11-2 record, Endo is the only wrestler with a mathematical chance of catching Goeido and forcing a playoff.
