今回取り上げる表現は “polygamist” です。
『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 「複婚を行っている人, 多妻の人」とありました。接頭辞 “poly-” が「多くの」「複」を示し, “polygamy” では「一夫多妻」を表すそうです。ちなみに「一妻多夫」は “polyandry” と表現することがわかりました。
English oxforddictionaries.com に “polygamist” は, “a person who has more than one wife or husband at the same time” と定義され, “ a Mississippi-based group of practicing polygamists” いう用例が挙げられていました。
