Police mark 9/11 anniversary with parade to honor fallen
The New York Police Department has marked the upcoming 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a parade to honor its 23 officers who died at the World Trade Center.
Friday’s parade through lower Manhattan also commemorated 99 officers who died of illnesses after participating in the rescue and recovery operation. Thirty-seven members of a port agency’s police department also died in the attack.
Police departments from around the United States and Canada joined the procession.
Bagpipers led marchers around the southern tip of Manhattan, ending near a memorial wall engraved with the names of the fallen NYPD officers.
Police Commissioner William Bratton thanked other police departments for their support. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio also attended.
The main Sept. 11 memorial ceremony will take place Sunday.

今回取り上げるのはengraveです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』(第5版 研究社)で調べますと、「(石、金属など)に(文字などを)彫る、(文字など)を(…に)彫り込む」という意味が見つかりました。Cambridge free English Dictionaryには “to cut a picture or design, or letters into the surface of a hard substance such as metal, wood, or stone”とあり、石や金属の他に木などの表面に彫ることも表すようです。
お墓に文字を刻むことを考えるとこの意味が覚えやすいなと思いました。graveだけでも〜を彫るという意味がありますが、形容詞では重大なという意味もあるそうです。(aqua)
