Let’s go to the museum / Hands-on kamaboko experience in Odawara
ODAWARA, Kanagawa — Kamaboko, or boiled fish cake, is known to Japanese as one of the quintessential foods of the New Year holiday season. At the Suzuhiro Kamaboko Museum, visitors can learn the basics of making the food. The museum is near Kazamatsuri Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway in the suburbs of Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The area around the museum, which is at the foot of the Hakone Mountains, is blessed with abundant underground water that moderately contains minerals. The natural water is great for soaking fish — the main ingredient of kamaboko — to remove extra blood and fat. The water makes the fish meat springy and tender, according to the museum.
Odawara, facing Sagami Bay, once enjoyed large hauls of barracuda and other fish, which were then used to make kamaboko. Consequently, kamaboko production became a major industry there.

今回取り上げるのは “in-depth education” です。「中へ、中に」という意味を表す接頭辞のinと「深さ、深度」という意味を持つdepthが組み合わさるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』(第5版 研究社)で調べてみますと、形容詞で「(限定)(調査などが)徹底的な、(報告などが)詳細な」という意味が載っておりました。LDOCEでは “thorough, complete, and considering all the details” と説明されておりました。
今回は “in-depth education on kamaboko” で「かまぼこに対する詳しい知識」という意味になるかと思われます。
