既に取り上げられていますが、愛媛県の伊方原発3号機が再稼働しました。
Ikata No. 3 N-reactor reaches criticality
The No. 3 reactor at Shikoku Electric Power Co.’s Ikata nuclear power station in Ehime Prefecture reached criticality on the morning of Saturday, a day after it was brought back online.
A self-sustained nuclear fission chain reaction began at 6:30 a.m. in the 890,000-kilowatt reactor, the company said.
The reactor is expected to start electricity generation and transmission on Monday, and reach full-capacity operations on Aug. 22 after increasing its output in six stages. It is expected to switch to commercial operations on Sept. 7 or later.
Shikoku Electric reactivated the Ikata No. 3 unit at 9 a.m. Friday by removing control rods from the reactor.
The reactor uses mixed-oxide, or MOX, fuel or a blend of uranium and plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel, for so-called pluthermal power generation.

今回取り上げるのはfission です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、不可算名詞で「（物理）核分裂、（生物）分裂」という意味があることがわかりました。LDOCEには “the process of splitting an atom to produce large amounts of energy or an explosion” という意味と、 “the process of dividing a cell into two or more parts” という意味が載っておりました。今回は核分裂の意味で用いられていますが、生物の分野では細胞の分裂を表すので、どちらの意味も覚えておきたいと思いました。 “nuclear fission chain reaction” で「核分裂連鎖反応」という意味になるかと思われます。ちなみに反意語はあのfusionです。
