RIO DE JANEIRO — Excitement is building in Rio de Janeiro, the host of the first Olympics in South America. The Games will kick off on Aug. 5, welcoming about 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries and territories.

Walking through the streets, one can see elements of the Games all around — a tunnel bearing the official slogan “A New World” on its entrance or an official merchandise store at Copacabana Beach.

With the completion of the velodrome, all competition venues are ready for the Games.

Many residents of favela slums can now be seen playing Olympics-related sports over the weekend thanks to the promotion of such activities as part of the Olympic legacy.

In contrast to these successes, however, the Rio Games have also faced some difficult challenges, including the Zika virus and Brazil’s economic slowdown. The high crime rate is casting the biggest shadow on the upcoming Olympics.
