祇園祭の山鉾の1つで、長刀鉾の背面に飾られる見送（みおくり）が新調されました。

今回取り上げるのは、“tapestry”という表現です。この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“a large piece of heavy cloth on which coloured threads are woven to produce a picture, pattern etc”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)では、「タペストリー、つづれ織り」といった意味が記載されていました。ちなみに、つづれ織りの起源はエジプトだそうで、紀元前15世紀の王墓からつづれ織りの衣類が見つかり、その後に世界各地に広まったようです。
