世界中で人気のある卓上ゲーム「オセロ」の考案者である長谷川五郎さんが、83歳で亡くなりました。
Othello game inventor dies at 83
A Japanese man known as the inventor of the modern version of the Othello board game died at his home in eastern Japan on Monday. Goro Hasegawa was 83.
In Othello, 2 players use stones painted white on one side and black on the other. They take turns placing the stones on a board consisting of 8 rows and 8 columns.

今回取り上げるのは、“column”という表現です。この単語を聞くと日本語でもそのまま言うように「コラム、定期特約寄稿欄」を連想する方も多いと思いますが、ここでは違う意味で用いられています。
まずLDOCEで“column”を調べてみると、“a line of numbers or words written under each other that goes down a page”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)では、「縦の行〔段〕、縦列」などとあり、この記事では「オセロ盤の縦列」を意味しています。また同記事で「横列」は“row”となっています。ちなみに表計算ソフトExcelでも、「列」を“column”、「行」を“row”で表します。(ninetails)
