The Cornerstone of Peace 復習

沖縄県糸満市にある平和記念公園で、戦争で亡くなられた方々の追悼式が開かれました。

Ceremony honors victims of Battle of Okinawa

The Yomiuri Shimbun
ITOMAN, Okinawa — Okinawa Prefecture on Thursday commemorated the lives lost during the Battle of Okinawa in the closing days of World War II.

The Okinawa prefectural government held a memorial service at the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman’s Mabuni area, the site of the last bloody fighting of the battle against U.S. forces.

Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga emphasized in a peace declaration the hardships that local people suffered. “Even though decades have passed, we cannot forget that our Okinawan people experienced the unreasonable and cruel nature of war, which is beyond imagination,” Onaga said.

Onaga also referred to the recent arrest of a civilian employee of the U.S. military in the prefecture on suspicion of killing a local woman and abandoning her body. Residents have “fear and strong resentment” over the incident, the governor said.

中略

The Okinawa prefectural government says a total of 200,656 people from Japan and the United States were killed in the battle, of whom 122,228 were from the prefecture.

The Cornerstone of Peace in the park bears the names of soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the battle, regardless of their nationality, in addition to Okinawan people who died overseas. The names of 84 war dead were newly inscribed this year, bringing the total number to 241,414.

Many bereaved family members visited the park from early Thursday morning, joining their hands in prayer in front of the monument.

今回取り上げるのは “The Cornerstone of Peace” です。
