先日広島の平和記念碑で行われたオバマ大統領のスピーチから表現を拾い上げたいと思います。

71 years ago, on a bright cloudless morning, death fell from the sky and the world was changed. A flash of light and a wall of fire destroyed a city and demonstrated that mankind possessed the means to destroy itself.
Why do we come to this place, to Hiroshima? We come to ponder a terrible force unleashed in the not so distant past.
We come to mourn the dead, including over 100,000 Japanese men, women and children, thousands of Koreans and a dozen Americans held prisoner.
Their souls speak to us. They ask us to look inward to take stock of who we are and what we might become.

今回取り上げる表現は"take stock of"という熟語です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版）には「〜を慎重に検討する、調べる」という意味が載っていました。また、Oxford Wordpower Dictionary には"to think about something very carefully before deciding what to do next"と定義されていました。ここでは「彼らが我々に対し自分の今の姿ともしかしたらなるかもしれない姿をもっと慎重に見るよう求める」というように訳せると考えられます。
現職のアメリカの大統領による平和記念碑の訪問は今回が初めてとのことなので、この行為はとてもよい試みだと思いました。(Mt.Fuji)
