Fuji green tea has global ambitions
FUJI, Shizuoka — Green tea used to be a prime item for export during the Meiji era (1868-1912), along with silk. However, prices and the consumption of green tea have been falling.
Producers in Shizuoka Prefecture, known as a major production area, have been tackling these challenges, and those in the city of Fuji have revived a high-end product that was first developed about 140 years ago.
In the early morning of a late April day, 10 workers were deftly picking leaves at a tea garden along the Sudogawa river in the city at the base of Mt. Fuji.
The leaves were immediately delivered to a facility run by a local JA agricultural cooperative in the city.
中略
Tea producers in the city examined documents to revive the processing method, with the aim to promote the tea brand as a value-added product, along with the story behind its development.

(aqua)
