An elderly elephant that set off a petition drive to move her out of her concrete pen in a small zoo in Japan has died.

Hanako, or "flower child," was a gift from the Thai government in 1949 and lived in Inokashira Park Zoo in Tokyo since she was 2. She was Japan's oldest elephant, and her life of 69 years was long for captive Asian elephants.

今回取り上げるのは、“petition drive”という表現です。“petition”は「請願(書)、嘆願(書)」などを意味しますが、ここでの“drive”にはどのような意味があるのでしょうか。そこでLDOCEで調べてみると、“an effort to achieve something, especially an effort by an organization for a particular purpose”とあり、また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)では「(グループ・団体の)推進運動、宣伝活動」と記載されていました。したがって、“petition drive”で「署名活動〔運動〕」となります。(ninetails)
