東京・六本木にて, ファッションデザイナー三宅一生氏による “MIYAKE ISSEY EXHIBITION” が開催されています。

Issey Miyake exhibition features 45 years of his career

An exhibition featuring 45 years of the work of fashion designer Issey Miyake is being held in the National Art Center, Tokyo in Tokyo’s Roppongi district.

The exhibition is titled “MIYAKE ISSEY EXHIBITION: The Work of Miyake Issey.”

Many of the items on display were made through a combination of advanced technology and manual labor.

One set of items is named “Kaso (masquerade) Olympic,” and comprises a large number of pleated uniforms featuring patterns of national flags from all over the world. The uniforms are awash in bright colors and dynamic designs, and visitors feel happy just looking at them.

The exhibition is an illustration of Miyake’s playful mind. Beside the entrance of the art center, for example, a huge dress about five meters high is folded like an accordion and hung from the ceiling.

本日取り上げる表現は “awash” です。

はじめに『新英和大辞典』(第五版, 研究社)で索引すると, 「1. 波にもまれて, (波間に)漂って( afloat ) 2. 水びたしで( flooded ) 3. <場所が>(…で)充満して, 一杯で( overflowing )[ with ]」とありました。 “awash” はもともと “a” + “wash” から成り立っているそうです。しかし今回は, 上記の意味ではうまく伝わりません。

そこでMerriam-Webster.comで調べると, “filled, covered, or completely overrun as if by a flood” とあり, “A movie awash in sentimentality.” という例が挙げられていました。

以上から, 今回は「―鮮やかな色と迫力のあるデザインが一面を飾り, 見るだけで来場者を楽しませた。」と訳せるのではないかと思いました。(Cayu)
