Hello Kitty keeps construction sites safe

SENDAI — Surrounding a construction site in central Sendai is a safety barricade with a difference. Brightening the atmosphere of what would otherwise be a drab-looking site, components of the 70-centimeter-tall pink plastic barricade each bear the image of Hello Kitty, a character loved both at home and abroad.

The Hello Kitty barricade is one of the most popular of the safety barricades created by Sendai Meiban Co. The Sendai-based company sells and leases out safety products for construction and roadwork sites, including safety signs. The company is currently planning to design characters promoting municipalities in Miyagi Prefecture.

Sendai Meiban started leasing out Hello Kitty barricades to construction companies and other firms in May 2015. As of the end of March, they were leased out to 527 companies and about 68,000 have been set up across the country.

今回取り上げるのはdrab-looking site です。まずdrabをLDOCEで調べてみますと “not bright in colour, especially in a way that stops you from feeling cheerful”という意味と、 “boring”の2つが載っていました。次に『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみますと形容詞で「1（さえない）茶色の　2単調な、おもしろみのない」という意味であることがわかりました。今回はおもしろみのないという意味で、おもしろくなさそうに見える、見た目がつまらない場所となります。

工事現場の柵は黄色などの目立つ色をしていますが、キャラクターがくっついていればさらに目立つので、新しい取り組みだと思いました。(aqua)
