Big Ben to fall silent for urgent repairs

LONDON (AFP-Jiji) — Big Ben will fall silent for several months while the iconic London clock tower next to the Houses of Parliament undergoes much-needed needed repairs, officials said on Tuesday.

The bell, whose chimes feature on British television and radio news bulletins, will be silenced as part of £29 million ($42 million) in repairs starting in 2017 and lasting for three years.

The work will repair the clock faces and mechanism, cracks in the tower’s masonry and corrosion in the roof, as well as restoring the edging around the clock faces to its original 19th-century color.

見出しにもある“fall silent”を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「急に黙り込む」という意味がありました。be silent などではなく、fall と繋がっていることで急な状況が表されていると感じました。

修復のための一時停止は１５７年間にわたるビッグベンの歴史の中で３度目で76年と2007年に行なわれているようです。またほんのわずかですが、２０１３年に故マーガレット・サッチャー元首相の葬儀に合わせ、敬意を表すために鐘が止められたことがあるということもわかりました。(lua)
