M6.4 quake hits southwestern Japan, no tsunami warning issued
A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 shook southwestern Japan on Thursday evening, the weather agency said. No tsunami warning was issued and no abnormalities have been detected in local nuclear power plants.
The quake at 9:26 p.m. registered the highest level of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale in Kumamoto City, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Police said they received emergency calls for help for people trapped under collapsed homes in Kumamoto Prefecture.
The quake originated at a depth of around 10 kilometers in Kumamoto Prefecture.
