Yoshinobu Takahashi has undergone an obvious metamorphosis after the offseason saw him make a quick switch from player with the Yomiuri Giants to the team’s manager, and one subtle aspect is visible to the trained eye.

Takahashi’s recent interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun was full of hesitation, revealing his detail-oriented personality. However, there was one word he used repeatedly during the interview — “win.”

“It’s why the Giants exist, so it’s the ultimate goal,” Takahashi said. “To achieve it, the manager must consider the best option. To win, factors such as whether a player is a veteran or an up-and-comer, or has results in the past or status — they’re all irrelevant.”

But that does not mean that Takahashi thinks winning is everything — he wants to win while at the same time capturing the hearts of the fans.
