Toothbrush gadget makes brushing teeth a fun daily chore

Brushing one's teeth can now be educational and fun thanks to a new device that allows a toothbrush to be interfaced with a smartphone.

Developed by a Sunstar Inc., the G.U.M. Play device attaches to the bottom of a standard toothbrush and enables users to enjoy games, music or news on their smartphones via toothbrush movements.

G.U.M. Play is equipped with a sensor that can detect movements and pressure while brushing the teeth. The sensor interfaces with a smartphone through a special free app.

One game enables users to defeat a monster that appears at the bottom right of the smartphone display by brushing their back teeth on the right side.

Sunstar developed G.U.M. Play to help show children and adults how to properly brush their teeth by making the mundane task fun.

今回取り上げるのは、“mundane task”という表現です。“mundane”という単語をLDOCEで調べると、“ordinary and not interesting or exciting”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）では、「日常の、ありふれた、つまらない」と記載されていました。そのため“mundane task”で「ありきたりな日課」などと表せます。

この記事を読んでいて、約半年前に行った介護実習のことを思い出しました。そこでも、子どもに正しい歯磨きを習慣づけるために、タブレットを使って動画を見せながら歯を磨いていました。G.U.M Playが幼稚園や保育園に普及して、歯磨き嫌いの子どもが減ればいいと思います。(ninetails)
