３日, 長野県諏訪大社の御柱祭にて, 祭りの最大の見せ場である「木落とし」が行われました。

CHINO, Nagano (Jiji Press) — A tree-falling ritual, a climax in the famed Onbashira Shinto festival held every six years, began in the Suwa district in Nagano Prefecture on Sunday.

A giant fir tree log, measuring about 17 meters and weighing about 10 tons, slid down a steep hillside slope with many male worshipers clinging on, in the “kiotoshi” ceremony.

A total of eight logs will be used in the two-day kiotoshi ritual. They will be erected at the four corners of two main buildings at the Kamisha branches of the Suwa Taisha shrine next month.

Another kiotoshi event is scheduled to take place for three days starting Friday for eight other logs to be used for the shrine’s Shimosha branches.Speech

本日取り上げる表現は “careen down” です。
はじめに, 『新英和大辞典』(第五版，研究社) には「1.【海事】<船が>片舷に傾く 2.*1<自動車などが>（左右に）傾きながら走る」とありました。ここから“careen”は, もとは航海に関する, 海語であることがわかりました。

そこで, 『ハイパー英語辞書』(Weblio)で検索したところ, 「傾く, すごいスピードで進む, （揺れながら）疾走する」と記されていました。印欧語根kar-は「硬いこと, 鋭いこと(hardなど)」を示し, また接尾辞の-eenは「まがいの織物[繊維]の意の名詞を造る」とありました。

参詣者を乗せた巨木が土煙を上げ, 急斜面を滑り落ちていく迫力が伝わってきます。かつて“log”は, 船速を測るのに使われていたこともあり, 今回“careen” を用いて表現したのではないかと考えました。(Cayu)
