Gymnast Uchimura claims ninth straight national title
Six-time all-around world champion gymnast Kohei Uchimura won a record-extending ninth consecutive national championship on Sunday, although he did not have the best of days as he made numerous mistakes.
Uchimura, who will be looking to defend his all-around crown at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this summer, nailed his final apparatus in the horizontal bar to secure victory with a score of 91.300 points at Yoyogi National Gymnasium
Kenzo Shirai was second with 89.700 and Ryohei Kato was third with 89.400.
Uchimura wobbled on a handstand at the rings and failed to land his jump in the vault.
The 27-year-old said a lack of nervousness worked against him with his ticket to Brazil already in the bag, adding he had to psych himself up for the horizontal bar.
今回取り上げるのは、“psych oneself up”という表現です。“psych”という単語から、何か心理的・精神的なことを表していると予想できます。この表現をLDOCEで調べてみると、“if you psych yourself up or if someone psychs you up, you get mentally prepared before doing something so that you feel confident”と定義されていました。また、『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)でも確認すると、「〔〜の〕心構えをする」とありました。したがって、この記事では「(鉄棒に向けて)心の準備をする、気合を入れる」などと表せます。(ninetails)
