Olympus settles US kickback probe, though legal troubles remain
TOKYO -- Japanese medical-device maker Olympus has reached a settlement with the U.S. government to end an investigation into subsidiaries suspected of paying kickbacks to doctors, bringing investors some relief even as other litigation drags on.
lympus Corp. of the Americas and a South American subsidiary have agreed to pay the U.S. government a total of $646 million to end the Justice Department probe. The companies are suspected of illegally offering doctors and hospitals payoffs, equipment loans and other incentives to use their products. They have agreed to improve compliance programs, including increased staff training, as part of the settlement.
Expenses to pay for the settlement were booked as extraordinary losses in the fiscal year ended March 2015 and the April-December 2015 period. The penalty thus has no effect on Olympus's earnings forecast for the year ending this month, according to the company. Higher profitability at once-flagging digital-camera operations and growing sales of gastrointestinal endoscopes, a company mainstay, are seen leading group net profit to a record 56 billion yen ($491 million), up from last fiscal year's 8.7 billion yen loss.
