woe betide Ａ 復習
「名探偵ポワロ」の「コーンワルの毒殺事件」というエピソードより表現を拾います。コーンワルの街を馬車で移動中の，ポワロとヘイスティングスの会話からです。
Poirot: In a town like this, Hastings, woe betide any husband who buys a tin of weed-killer.
Hastings: Probably only one place to buy something like that.
Poirot: But then if his wife suffers from gastritis and it is inclined to be imaginative, the fat is in the flames, I think.
今回は，woe betide Aを取り上げます。『クラウン英語イディオム辞典』（三省堂）には，woe betide you [etc.] ifで「｟口｠…なら困ったことになる」（“(formal or humorous) a phrase that is used to warn sb that there will be trouble for them if they do sth or do not do sth-- OALD8）とありました。手持ちの英和辞典，英英辞典，全て確認しましたが，ifまで書かれていたのは同イディオム辞典のみでした。The Phrase Finderは，この表現を「古めかしい表現」とし，「中世の英語の表現のようだ」としています。このサイトによりますと，その時にGoogle検索でこの表現を掛けたら60,000件以上ヒットしたということです。因みに，私もGoogle検索を掛けましたが，30,000件以上ヒットしました。この場合のbetideはtimeと置き換えが可能でこの場合にあてはめると，「罰が当たる」ということになります。初出は，ウィリアム・ラングランドの夢物語，Piers Plowman, 1393ということです。
因みに，吹き替えでは，「こういう小さな街では，夫が除草剤を買うだけで注目されますよ」としていました。おそらく翻訳者は，OALD8の定義の中のtroubleを「面倒」という解釈で，「面倒」＝「街中の（悪い）噂になること」という訳にしたと考えます。
話しは変わりますが，先程のwoe betide A ifの用例が見つかりました。3月で紙版を廃止すると発表したThe Independent（電子版，2016年2月1日付）のVoiceからお届けします。交通事故以来，機械に頼りきりになってしまったことを妻が描写している形を取っています。

And now, in his room at the care home, he’s tooled up with lots of his old tech. Laptop, iPad, Kindle, mobile phone... none of which he uses. But woe betide if I unplug the computer or move the iPad. He might not be able to use them, but dammit, he wants them. They are part of who he is, and who he was, the tech PR, the gamer and the collector.
