‘Snow carrots’ as sweet as fruit

FUKAURA, Aomori — Carrots are harvested even in midwinter in the northern town of Fukaura, Aomori Prefecture, where the extremely cold weather they endure gives them a fruit-like sweetness.

The carrots have been given the name Fukaura Yuki Ninjin (Fukaura snow carrots).

They are grown in a field overlooking the Sea of Japan at the foot of the Shirakami Sanchi mountains, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
