Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the city’s newest hockey team: the New York Riveters.
The Riveters, named for the always-encouraging Rosie and with a nod to the city’s industrial past, are one of four teams in the National Women’s Hockey League, the first professional female hockey league (to pay its players, that is).

アイスホッケーはカナダ・アメリカで大変な人気を博しているものの、女子プロリーグは無く、女子選手の国内最大の舞台はNCAA(National Collegiate Athletic Association)に限定されていました。ですから、昨年National Women's Hockey Leagueが設立されたことは、女性アスリートの活躍の場を広げる手助けになることでしょう。一方、女子スポーツが盛んなアメリカにおいて、それもアイスホッケーという人気競技でさえ、ようやく去年プロスポーツ化にこぎ着けたという事実からは、女子プロスポーツをビジネスとして成立させることの難しさが見えてくるようです。
