It says a lot for the sheer inventiveness of the Harry Potter books that by the time Harry reaches the Great Hall, a singing hat doesn’t seem even slightly out of the ordinary. It’s such a witty song, too. If I were ever to have dinner with a hat, it would be this one.

『ハリーポッター賢者の石』の中に登場する、帽子が歌を唄う場面です。映画でも登場する"Sorting Hat"(組分け帽子)ですが、ホグワーツ魔法学校に入ってくる新入生は、この喋る帽子をかぶり、4つの寮のうちどの寮に入るかを選定してもらいます。

記事の解説部分に、この詩について"It’s such a witty song, too." とありましたが、はじめはどこが"witty"なのかわかりませんでした。そこで、詩をよく読み、"I'll eat myself"が気になったので調べみたところ、どこが"witty"なのかがわかりました。

この表現のもとになる表現は、"I'll eat my hat"であると考えられます。このイディオムは"used to say that you think sth is very unlikely to happen"と定義されていました。(Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 8th)

『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』には、"I'll eat my hat if..."で「 •••なんていうことは絶対にありえないよ」と定義され、「もし•••なら, 帽子を食べてみようの意から」と説明されていました。以下、例文です。

今回の記事に引用されていた詩に戻ります。以上の表現を踏まえた上で、"witty"とされる点を考えてみると、

"I’ll eat myself if you can find

A smarter hat than me."

を、帽子である"Sorting Hat"が、このイディオムの"my hat"の部分を、自身が帽子であるために、"myself"を選んでいる所にあると考えられます。さらに、「自分より賢い帽子はいない」との意味を込め、自分自身を誇らしく思っていることも面白い点であるように思えます。
