parlay 〜 into

最近のニュース番組やワイドショーでもっぱら話題となっているSMAPの解散報道がBBCでも取り上げられていました。

今回取り上げる表現は “parlay 〜 into”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』（大修館書店）第一義では「〈元金ともうけた金〉を次の賭けに賭ける」，第二義では〈資金・才能など〉を活用して〔富・成功などを〕得る」とあり，LDOCEでは “to use advantages that you already have, such as your skills, experience or money, and increase their value by using all your opportunities well”と定義されています。

第一義にもあるように，ギャンブルから来た表現で，以前の記事でも先輩が触れられています。

“parlay”という表現を使うことで，本来の音楽活動で博した人気を活かして他のジャンルにも進出していったとの内容がかなり分かりやすく伝わってきます。（Inaho）
