"be nothing to sniff at"を取り上げます。"sniff at"で「鼻で笑う」などという意味がありますが直訳では鼻で笑うものではないこと。となるかと思いますが、会話でよく使われる表現で「金額などがばかにできない, 軽々しくは考えられない」という意味になりますLDOCEによると“used about an offer, especially of money, that is very good, and which you should consider carefully”とありました。"sniff"が使われていますが、"sneeze"でも言い換えることができます。またこれはアメリカの略式でイギリスでは"be not to be sniffed at"となります。(lua)
