今回取り上げるのは、“liveried” /lív(ə)rid/という表現です。まずLDOCEで調べてみると、“a special uniform worn by servants in past times”という定義が見つかりました。
もともと、この単語は古期フランス語の「身分の高い人から頂いたもの」の意味から派生した言葉であるため、上記のような「（家臣・召使などの）そろいの制服、仕着せ」（『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』大修館書店）を意味するようになりました。この記事では、“liveried”と形容詞で用いられているため、「制服を着ている」などと表せます。(ninetails)
