Gifu man's missing ostrich found dead in nearby woods
An ostrich that had escaped from its owner in Gifu Prefecture at the end of last year was found dead Sunday with the branch of a tree protruding from in its neck, the Asahi Shimbun reported Monday.
The ostrich was about 2 meters tall, and nearby residents feared accidents after reports of its disappearance. Its owner is a male ceramic artist in his 30s who keeps more ostriches in a fenced-in enclosure, according to media reports.
Part of the fence was found broken Thursday after the ostrich apparently got out, the reports said.

以前、名詞形protrusionがとりあげられていました。（cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120817/1345171006 ）今回は、その動詞形になります。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Onlineでは“to stick out from somewhere”と定義されていました。『Wisdom英和辞典第3版』（三省堂）を確認してみると「«…から»突き出る」と載っていたことから、「木の枝が首から突き出した状態で発見された」と解釈できます。ちなみに、protruding teeth（tooth）で「出っ歯」となります。これを機におさえておきます。（Chris）
