Record January temperatures logged in Japan
Temperatures in many parts of Japan have hit record highs for the month of January.
Record daytime highs were registered at 26 observation points on Sunday. They included the town of Hanawa in the northeastern prefecture of Fukushima, where the mercury rose to 16.9 degrees Celsius. Warmer-than-usual temperatures were reported in many other places. The city of Naha in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa had a temperature of 23.7 degrees. The daytime high for central Tokyo was 16.2 degrees.

気になった表現は“log”です。
「丸太」や“log in[out]”でおなじみですが、動詞で「記録する」という意味がありました（『Wisdom英和辞典第3版』三省堂）。Oxford Learner’s Dictionaryだと“make a systematic recording of events, observations, or measurements”と定義されています。先生がすでに解説されていることですが、船の速度が測れなかった時代に丸太を海に投げ込んで一定時間に流れた距離で速度を割り出し記録していたことが由来のようです（cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120923/1348385936）。このことが転じて「logbook : 航海日誌」と呼ばれるようになり、それを帳簿する行為がlog inとなりました。詳細は不明でしたが、ここからコンピュータ用語にも発展していったようです。（Chris）
