シンガポールの伝統の一つである、屋台を引いて食べ物を売る行商人「ホーカー」は現在その存続が危ぶまれています。しかしそんな中でも伝統を引き継ごうとする若い人々がいるようです。
The 'hawkerpreneurs' keeping Singapore's street foods alive
Douglas Ng, 24, is a rare fresh-faced "hawkerpreneur" at Golden Mile Food Centre, a hawker center in Singapore. The owner/chef of Fishball Story, Ng arrives to work during the dark hours of the morning to prep for the day.
He kneads fishball dough, prepares sambal-spiked chili paste and fries condiments like lard and shallots.
Ng's fishballs are unique and legitimately old school.
取り上げるのは“old school”ですが，ここでは「母校の」ではありません。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』には形容詞で「頭の古い」などと訳されていましたが、『英辞郎on the WEB』の「古い習慣を守る、保守的な、伝統スタイルの」という意味の方がぴったりきます。Macmillan Dictionaryには” traditional or typical of the early style of something”との定義がありました。
Online Etymology Dictionaryを見てみると、1749年に「政治的な事柄に対して保守的な考えを持つ人々」という意味で始まったことが書かれていました。
続いて、見出しにある"hawkerpreneurs"も気になったので調べてみました。”preneur”とはフランス語で「受け手」(=taker)を意味するようで、「hawkerの伝統を請け負う者たち」という意味で使われているのではないかと考えました。 ”preneur”と聞くと“entrepreneur”を思い浮かべますが、これはフランス語で「（空間的・二点間）〜の間に、〜の間で」(ウィクショナリー)を意味する“entre”+“preneur”であり、「起業家」よりもむしろ「仲介者」の方が文字通りの意味であったことが分かりました。(bookmark)
