SUSHI AND BEYONDのChapter 7から英語表現を採り上げます。引用箇所は筆者が知人から勧められた日本のてんぷら料理専門店を訪れた場面について書かれたものです。
whitebaitは「シラス」のこと（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。もともとbaitは「(釣り針・わなに仕掛ける)えさ, 餌」という意味の英単語です。つまりシラスは英語圏では捕食される「えさ」として解釈される傾向にあるのですね。（Koyamamoto）
