New York Today: Alternative Christmases

Good morning on this waterlogged Thursday.
It’s Christmas Eve.

As you may be able to tell from the weather ― and everyone is talking about the weather ― we won’t be getting a white Christmas this year.
I
nstead, we may have record-breaking high temperatures.

But white Christmases are rarer in New York than you might think: The historical probability of one in New York is somewhere between 11 and 25 percent.

So rather than bemoaning the warm temperatures, or letting global-warming-related anxiety get the better of you, here are some ideas for celebrating a less-than-wintry Christmas:

"less-than-wintry Christmas"を取り上げます。分けて調べてみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』では"less-than"で「に満たない」と"wintry"は「冬の」「冬らしい」という意味がありました。LDOCEで"wintry"の意味を確認してみると"cold or typical of winter"とありました。冬の中でも暖かい気温で冬とは言えないようなクリスマスであったことがわかります。
