Kensho Ono transcends genres: Voice acting star aims for top tier in stage, singing, too

A handsome 26-year-old voice actor for anime, Kensho Ono has nearly 500,000 followers on Twitter. He started his showbiz career as a child actor and has recently been gaining popularity as a singer, too. Here is a rising entertainer whose work transcends different genres.

Ono’s latest project is performing in the stage play “Line (Kokkyo) no Muko” (Beyond the line), which opened Thursday and will run through Dec. 27 at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s Theatre West in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

The play depicts a Japan that is divided into two opposing nations after being defeated in war. A family in a small mountain hamlet located on the border is gradually affected by the tide of history.

In addition to Ono, the play’s cast includes Yoshimasa Kondo, Keiko Toda, Shoko Takada and Nana Seino.

I visited Ono before the play’s opening to see how he was preparing. It was Nov. 14, right after his rehearsals started.

“transcend”を取り上げます。英文学専攻の人はRalph Waldo Emerson，Henry David Thoreauに代表されるtranscendentalism（超絶主義）を想起すると思います。これは日本でいうとちょうど江戸末期から明治にかけて起きたニューイングランドで栄えた思想運動で，アメリカンデモクラシーの形成へとつながったとされる運動でしたね。

”across, through”を意味する接頭辞”tran-”と”climb, step”を意味する語幹”scend”から成る単語です。”scend”は”scal”の異形態であることを考えると語義がイメージしやすくなるともしれません。LDOCEには”to go beyond the usual limits of something”、Genius 第三版には「1.<経験・理性など(の限界)>を超える、超越的である 2.…にまさる、しのぐ、卓越する。 3.<神が>(宇宙などを)越える」とあります。”go over”, ”beyond”, ”across”などのformalな表現として覚えておくと役に立つこともあるかもしれません。
